Performing Choirs

The Idea of North

The Idea of North has been mesmerising audiences for over 15 years with their dextrous and distinctive style which is both astonishingly precise and impossibly beautiful.

The A cappella singing movement has been growing steadily in Australia for a number of years. Exemplary groups like The Idea Of North and CDs like “Here & Now” take this genre to new heights.

The Idea of North will perform for all delegates, Big sing participants and honour choir students in a concert on Thursday night.  This concert is included as part of your registration fee.  If you want a second helping of TION they will also give a public concert which delegates and participants may purchase tickets for through the Glasshouse Box Office.

The Australian Voices

The Australian Voices (TAV) is one of Australia's most innovative ensembles. Over the past 17 years, they have commissioned over one hundred new works and performed them across Australia and around the world. Renowned for their unique sound and attention to excellence, attending a TAV concert is a uniquely thrilling experience.

Artistic Director Gordon Hamilton is a resident conductor of Choralfest and will be conducting The Big Sing.

Gondwana Chorale

Gondwana Chorale is an SATB Choir for young women aged 16 - 21 and young men and boys aged 14 - 21. The Gondwana Chorale is a chance to build on the skills learnt with Gondwana Voices, make music at the highest level, be inspired, have fun and maintain friendships forged during previous Gondwana activities.

2009 conductors are Principal Guest Conductor Paul Holley, Director of the award winning Brisbane Birralee Blokes and Guest Conductor Claire Preston from the Victorian College of the Arts and they will be joined by pianist Ben van Tienen.

The Fifth House

The Fifth House is a five-piece group from Sydney, Australia. Their unique style is a blend of world acappella music with a jazz texture. They create a truly distinctive sound that's immediately engaging and makes you FEEL GOOD just to hear.

The members of The Fifth House are:
Sara Browne | Linda Knight | Frank Zeichner | Gary Smith | Samantha Fiddes

Birralee Voices

The ensemble is made up of approximately 65 singers aged between 11 and 17 years. As well as attending a 90 minute weekly rehearsal, the members of this ensemble are committed to music studies and/or voice training.

Members of this ensemble benefit from a regular performance, recording and touring program. They meet the demands of their performance and touring schedule by having a strong commitment to regular attendance and by being willing to revise and learn in their own time. In addition to the excitement of achieving high artistic goals and the personal enrichment experienced by each member, there is also a strong emphasis placed on the benefits of sharing the gift of music with others and the intrinsic value of music within society.
